Archaefructus sinensis was named by Sun et al. (2002) [The authority of this species (Sun, Dilcher, Ji et Nixon) is different from the publication authors. ]. It is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Huangbanjigou, Jianshangou Bed (NIGP collection), which is in a Barremian lacustrine - large mudstone in the Yixian Formation of China.
