Taxonomy
Thoracosauridae was named by Cope (1871). Its type is Thoracosaurus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Tomistominae by Kuhn (1966); it was reranked as the subfamily Thoracosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928), Carpenter (1983), Bryant (1989), Storrs and Efimov (2000) and Myrick (2001).

It was assigned to Procoelia by Cope (1871) and Cope (1875); to Crocodilidae by Nopcsa (1928); to Gavialiformes by Hay (1930); to Eusuchia by Domning and Clark (1993); and to Crocodylidae by Carpenter (1983), Bryant (1989), Storrs and Efimov (2000) and Myrick (2001).
