Platanocarpus elkneckensis was named by Pedersen et al. (1994) [Plate II, 1 of Pedersen et al. (1994)]. Its type specimen is PP35073. Its type locality is The Bull Mountain locality, which is in the Albian of claystone the Patapsco Formation Maryland.
