Hamatia elkneckensis was named by Pedersen et al. (1994) [Plate IV, 3 of Pedersen et al. (1994). Specimens deposited in the paleobotanical collections of the Department of Geology, Field Museum of Natural History.]. Its type specimen is PP43810. Its type locality is The Bull Mountain locality, which is in the Albian of claystone the Patapsco Formation Maryland. It is the type species of Hamatia.
