Pteranodontia was named by Marsh (1876). It was considered monophyletic by Unwin (2003).

It was reranked as the family Pteranodontia by Günther (1886); it was synonymized subjectively with Pteranodontidae by Kellner (2010).

It was assigned to Pterosauria by Marsh (1876); to Ornithosauria by Günther (1886); to Euornithocheira by Unwin (2003); and to Pterodactyloidea by Headden and Campos (2014).
