Laopteryx was named by Marsh (1881). Its type is Laopteryx priscus.
It was assigned to Saururae by Zittel (1890); to Aves by Marsh (1881) and Mook (1916); to Archaeopterygidae by Hay (1902) and Hay (1930); to Aves by Lambrecht (1933); to Pterosauria by Brodkorb (1978); to Pterosauria by Ostrom (1986); and to Pterodactyloidea by Galton (1981) and Chure et al. (2006).
