Zanclodontidae was named by Marsh (1882). Its type is Zanclodon.

It was synonymized subjectively with Megalosaurinidae by Lydekker (1888); it was synonymized subjectively with Teratosauridae by Kuhn (1946), Romer (1956) and Walker (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Plateosauridae by Marsh (1895), Marsh (1896) and Steel (1970).
