Nanosauridae was named by Marsh (1878). Its type is Nanosaurus.

It was reranked as the subfamily Nanosauridae by Nopcsa (1901); it was reranked as the subfamily Nannosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928) and Huene (1934); it was reranked as the subfamily Nanosaurinae by Huene (1934) and Kuhn (1966); it was synonymized subjectively with Hypsilophodontidae by Kuhn (1964); it was synonymized subjectively with Fabrosauridae by Galton (1978).

K. A. v. Zittel 1890Zähne in einer Reihe, die Kronen stark zusammengedrückt und gezackt. Wirbel und Gliedmaassenknochen hohl. Vorderbeine massig lang: Humerus mit starkem Radialkamm. Femur gekrümmt mit kräftigem innerem Trochauter. Tibia gerade, länger als Femur. Fibida sehr schlank, vogelartig. Heum mit dünnem vorderem Fortsatz. Ischia lang.
B. F. Nopcsa 1901(tökéletlenül ismérve). — Mellsö csigolyák biconcávak; 3 sacrumcsigolya; femur rövidebb mint a tibia. Lábszár és más (?) csontok nagyon vékony falúak.

[(imperfectly known). - Trunk vertebrae biconcave; 3 sacrum vertebrae; femur shorter than tibia. Legs and other (?) bones are very thin-walled.]
