Platananthus was named by Manchester (1986) [known from petrified and compression specimens]. It is not extant. Its type is Platananthus synandrus. It was considered monophyletic by Manchester (1986).

It was assigned to Platanaceae by Manchester (1986) and Friis et al. (1988).

S. R. Manchester 1986Globose staminate heads 3-10 mm in diameter composed of a spheroidal receptacular core surrounded by numerous staminate florets. Each floret has five elongate anthers on short filaments with conical, elongate-peltate connectives surrounded by prominent tepals. Pollen reticulate, tricolpate, and small, 11-16 μm polar length, 8-14 μm equatorial diameter.
