Platananthus scanicus was named by Friis et al. (1988) [Plate 5, fig. 1 of Friis et al. (1988). Specimens are deposited in the paleobotanical collections of the Swidish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm, Sweden (S).]. Its type specimen is S 100001. Its type locality is Hoganas AB quarry at Asen, Scania, Sweden, which is in a Santonian/Campanian lacustrine horizon in Sweden.
