Hypsiprymnodontinae was named by Collett (1887). It is extant. Its type is Hypsiprymnodon.

It was reranked as the subfamily Hypsiprymnodontidae by Pocock (1921) and Prideaux (2004).

It was assigned to Phalangeroidea by Pocock (1921); to Potoroidae by Flannery and Archer (1987); and to Macropodoidea by Prideaux (2004).
