Halianassa allisoni was named by Kilmer (1965). Its type specimen is UCMP 47250, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dioplotherium allisoni by Domning (1989), Toledo and Domning (1991), Domning (1994), Domning (1996), Bergqvist et al. (1999), Domning (2008) and Voss (2014).
