Taxonomy
Manati gigas was named by Zimmermann (1780) [No type specimen has been designated (Domning, 1996).]. Its type specimen is none designated and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Rytina gigas by Gray (1850) and Gray (1866); it was recombined as Rhytina gigas by Woodward (1885), Lydekker (1887), Trouessart (1898) and Abel (1904); it was recombined as Manatus gigas by Lucas (1891); it was recombined as Hydrodamalis gigas by Palmer (1895), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Scheffer and Rice (1963), Domning (1978), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Forsten and Youngman (1982), Domning (1994), Domning (1996), Rice (1998), Domning (2008) and Voss (2014).
