Taxonomy
Halicetus ignotus was named by Kellogg (1969). Its type specimen is USNM 23636, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Calvert Beach Run, south of, Zone 19, which is in a Serravallian offshore shelf sandstone in the Choptank Formation of Maryland.
