Taxonomy
Neosqualodon gemmellaroi was named by Fabiani (1949). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ragusa, which is in a Langhian marine limestone in the Langhiano Formation of Italy.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001); it was recombined as Neosqualodon gastaldii gemmellaroi by Rothausen (1968), Rothausen (1968) and Di Patti (2014).
