Taxonomy
Xiaosaurus was named by Dong and Tang (1983). Its type is Xiaosaurus dashanpensis.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Sereno (1991); it was considered a nomen dubium by Norman et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Hypsilophodontidae by Dong and Tang (1983) and Dong (1992); to Fabrosauridae by Peng (1992) and Dong (1997); and to Ornithischia by Barrett et al. (2005).
