Taxonomy
Basilosauroidea was named by Mitchell (1989). It is not extant. It was considered paraphyletic by Rice (1998).

It was assigned to Cetacea by Rice (2009); and to Archaeoceti by Mitchell (1989), Rice (1998), Gingerich (2005) and Abu El-kheir et al. (2013).
