Alexornis was named by Brodkorb (1976). Its type is Alexornis antecedens. It is the type genus of Alexornithidae.
It was assigned to Enantiornithes by Chiappe (1991) and Chiappe and Calvo (1994); and to Alexornithidae by Brodkorb (1976), Kurochkin (1996) and Kurochkin (2000).
