Agnosphitys was named by Fraser et al. (2002). Its type is Agnosphitys cromhallensis.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Langer (2004).

It was assigned to Dinosauriformes by Fraser et al. (2002); and to Guaibasauridae by Ezcurra (2010).
