Taxonomy
Stylophyllum praenuntians was named by Volz (1896). Its type locality is Valparola, Italy, which is in a Carnian shallow subtidal horizon in the Cassian Formation of Italy. It is the type species of Protostylophyllum.

It was recombined as Protostylophyllum praenuntians by Roniewicz and Michalik (2002).
