Liornis was named by Ameghino (1894).

It was synonymized subjectively with Phorusrhacos by Alvarenga and Holfing (2003).

It was assigned to Phororhacidae by Ameghino (1894); and to Brontornithidae by Lambrecht (1933) and Wetmore (1960).
