Diffingia was named by Fedorowski (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse-l P Sakm]. Its type is Diffingia collecticia. It is the type genus of Diffingiidae, Diffingiinae.

It was assigned to Diffingiinae by Fedorowski (1985); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
