Taxonomy
Borhyaena riggsi was named by Sinclair (1930). Its type locality is Gran Barranca, which is in an Eocene/Miocene terrestrial claystone in the Sarmiento Formation of Argentina.

It was recombined as Acrocyon riggsi by Marshall (1978) and Goin et al. (2007).
