Taxonomy
Echinasteridae was named by Verrill (1870). It is extant. Its type is Echinaster. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Leptognathina by Spencer and Wright (1966); to Valvatida by Gale (1987); and to Spinulosida by Perrier (1884), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
