Taxonomy
Asteriidae was named by Gray (1840) [Initial spelling "Asteriadae" corrected by Sladen (1889)]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Cryptozonia by Clark and Twitchell (1915); to Asteriadina by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Hess (1972); to Forcipulatida by Gale (2011) and Gale (2011); and to Forcipulatida by Perrier (1894), Gale (1987), Blake (1989) and Mah and Blake (2012).
