Asteroidea - Valvatida - Goniasteridae

Goniasteridae was named by Forbes (1841) [Initial spelling "Goniasteriae" modified by Perrier (1875)]. It is extant. Its type is Goniaster. It was considered monophyletic by Gale (1987) and paraphyletic by Gale (2011) and Mah and Blake (2012).

It was assigned to Granulosina by Spencer and Wright (1966) and Hess (1972); to Neoasteroidea by Donovan et al. (1993); to Goniasteroidea by Eagle (1999); to Tripedicellaria by Gale (2011); and to Valvatida by Perrier (1884), Gale (1987), Blake and Jagt (2005), Breton and Néraudeau (2008), Villier (2008), Blake (2010), Villier (2010), Gale (2011) and Mah and Blake (2012).
