Aldebarania was named by Blake and Sturgeon (1995). It is not extant. Its type is Aldebarania arenitea.
It was assigned to Paxillosida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Astropectinidae by Blake and Sturgeon (1995) and Blake and Jagt (2005).

Sturgeon 1995 | A genus of Astropectinidae with disc comparatively large for family; interbrachial arcs angulary to weakly rounded; arm outline (as viewed from above) broadly triangular, straight-sided, abruptly tapering. Marginals well defined, small, rectangular in dorsal outline; fascioles distinct, deep, not broad. Interbrachial, medial superomarginals clearly smaller than inferomarginals, inset from abradial margin (i.e., inferomarginals forming abradial edge of arm), ossicles of two series dissimilar. Actinal ossicles numerous. |
