Borhyaenoidea was named by Ameghino (1894) [1894a]. Its type is Borhyaenidae. It was considered monophyletic by de Muizon (1999) and Forasiepi (2009).

It was assigned to Marsupialia by Marshall (1978) and Patterson and Marshall (1978); to Didelphimorphia by de Muizon (1999); and to Sparassodonta by Goin (1997) and Forasiepi (2009).
