Ardea violacea was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.
It was recombined as Nycticorax violaceus by Emslie (1992) and Morgan (1994); it was recombined as Nyctanassa violacea by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Olson and Hilgartner (1982), Steadman (1986), Steadman et al. (2003), Kilmer and Steadman (2016), Clements et al. (2017) and Oswald and Steadman (2018).
It was recombined as Nycticorax violaceus by Emslie (1992) and Morgan (1994); it was recombined as Nyctanassa violacea by Wetmore (1931), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956), Olson and Hilgartner (1982), Steadman (1986), Steadman et al.
