Taxonomy
Mesophyllum was named by Lemoine (1930). It is extant. Its type is Mesophyllum austriacum.

It was assigned to Melobesieae by Johnson (1945); to Corallinaceae by Howe (1934), Lakhanpal et al. (1976) and Riding et al. (1991); to Hapalidiaceae by Bucek and Kohler (2017); to Melobesioideae by Lemoine (1928), Bailey and Chapman (1998), Stockar (2000), Mirsa et al. (2002), Rasser and Nebelsick (2003), Misra et al.
