Leptopleuron was named by Owen (1851). Its type is Leptopleuron lacertinum. It is the type genus of Leptopleuroninae.
It was assigned to Thecodontia by Owen (1861); to Procolophoninae by Colbert (1946); to Procolophonidae by Carroll (1988); and to Leptopleuroninae by Modesto et al. (2002), Modesto and Damiani (2007), Säilä (2008) and Saila (2010).
