Palaeoscincus latus was named by Marsh (1892). It is not extant. Its type specimen is YPM 4810.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Coombs (1990), Coombs and Deméré (1996), Ford (2000), Carpenter (2001) and Vickaryous et al. (2004).
