Cimolopteryx was named by Marsh (1889). Its type is Cimolopteryx rarus.
It was assigned to Fringillidae by Hay (1902); to Aves by Hay (1930); to Apatornithidae by Shufeldt (1915) and Lambrecht (1933); to Charadriiformes by Hope (2002); and to Cimolopterygidae by Brodkorb (1963), Cracraft (1972) and Agnolin (2010).
