Ambloctonidae was named by Cope (1877). Its type is Ambloctonus.

It was corrected as Amblyctonidae by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); it was synonymized subjectively with Palaeonictinae by Van Valen (1967).

It was assigned to Creodonta by Cope (1880) and Cope (1880); and to Creodonta by Hay (1902).
