Sus subtriquetra was named by Xue (1981) ['Small-middle size. Canine more slender and longer, the size and shape of its crown top is nearly as well as the basal part, and the cross section shows a round triangle.']. Its type specimen is not given. Its type locality is You-he, Lower River You, Weinan, Shensi, which is in a Piacenzian lacustrine horizon in China.
