Dysagnus encaustus was named by Cope (1876). It is not extant. Its type specimen is AMNH 5739.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Lull and Wright (1942); it was considered a nomen dubium by Coombs and Galton (1988), Weishampel and Horner (1990), Dodson and Currie (1990), Horner et al. (2004) and Dodson et al. (2004).
