Tillodonta was named by Marsh (1875).

It was reranked as the suborder Tillodonta by Cope (1875); it was corrected as Tillodontia by Hay (1902), McKenna (1975) and Carroll (1988); it was misspelled as Tillodontia by Gadow (1898); it was reranked as the suborder Tillodontia by Flower and Lydekker (1891) and McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Insectivora by Cope (1875); to Eutheria by Flower and Lydekker (1891); to Trogontia by Gadow (1898); to Monodelphia by Hay (1902); to Eparctocyona by McKenna (1975); to Eutheria by Carroll (1988); and to Cimolesta by McKenna and Bell (1997).
