Nanopus was named by Marsh (1894). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Nanopus caudatus.

It was assigned to Salamandroidea by Leonardi (1951); to Temnospondyli by Haubold (1971); to Temnospondylia by Haubold (1974); and to Temnospondyli by Haubold et al. (2005).
