Velociraptor mongoliensis

Reptilia - Dromaeosauridae

Taxonomy
Velociraptor mongoliensis was named by Osborn (1924). Its type specimen is AMNH 6515, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Shabarakh Usu (AMNH loc. 12049), which is in a Campanian eolian sandstone in the Djadokhta Formation of Mongolia. It was considered monophyletic by Currie (2000).

H.-D. Sues 1977Small carnivorous theropod with low, elongate skull. Muzzle depressed. Orbit large, larger than posterior antorbital fenestra. Upper temporal arcade relatively short. Glenoid fossa less depressed below dorsal margin of mandible than in Dromaeosaurus. Dental formula: pmx 3 + mx 9-10/d15. Anterior carinae of teeth with 38 to 40 denticles per 5 mm, posterior carinae with 25 to 26. Anterior denticles much smaller than posterior denticles.
