Grypophyllum was named by Wedekind (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras-l Sepkoski's reference number: 680]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ptenophyllinae by Kiessling (2003).
