Sabiaceae was named by von Blume (1851).

It was assigned to Dicotyledones by Chandler (1961) and Chandler (1962); to Centrospermae by Chandler (1963); to Sapindales by MacGinitie (1941) and Hickey (1977); to Ranunculales by Mabberley (2000); and to Proteales by The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (2016).

The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group 2016	We move Sabiaceae into Proteales on the basis of strong support found by Sun et al. (2016). Bootstrap support for this placement was not strong in earlier studies (Ruhfel et al., 2014, 63%; Soltis et al., 2011, 59%).
