Fraxinus yubaensis was named by MacGinitie (1941). Its type specimen is U.C. Mus. Pal. Paleobot. Ser. cotypes nos. 2324, 2325. Its type locality is UCMP loc. P3318, Chalk Bluff, which is in an Eocene floodplain claystone in California.
