Phyllites cordiaefolia was named by MacGinitie (1941). Its type specimen is U.C. Mus. Pal. Paleobot. Ser. holotype no. 2349. Its type locality is UCMP loc. P3345, Chalk Bluff, which is in an Eocene floodplain claystone in California.
