Quercophyllum platanoides was named by MacGinitie (1941). Its type specimen is Calif. Acad. Sci. Paleo. Type Coll. cotypes nos. 7778, 7779. Its type locality is Sailor Flat Locality 3347, which is in an Eocene floodplain shale in California.
