Rhinoceros etruscus was named by Falconer (1868).

It was recombined as Dicerorhinus etruscus by Loose (1975); it was recombined as Stephanorhinus etruscus by Antoine and Saraç (2005), Symeonidis et al. (2006) and Deng et al. (2011).
