Mesophyllum (Hemicosmophyllum) was named by Wedekind and Vollbrecht (1931) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 1240]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Hemicosmophyllum by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Mesophyllum by Wedekind and Vollbrecht (1931) and Hill (1956); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
