Taxonomy
Elcabrosaurus was named by Case (1907). It is not extant. Its type is Elcabrosaurus baldwini.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sphenacodon by Reisz (1986).

It was assigned to Poliosauridae by Case (1907); and to Ophiacodontidae by Hay (1930).
