Taxonomy
Orthacanthus buxieri was named by Heyler and Poplin (1989). Its type locality is Buxieres-les-Mines (Autunian shales), which is in an Asselian/Sakmarian terrestrial shale in France.

L. Agassiz 1843Orthacanthus with a 18 cm long neurocranium; precerebral fossa protruding in front of the orbital region; scapulocoracoid with a flat dorsal margin (presence of a dorsal accessory cartilage not proved), and a lower extremity pointing downwards and without any accessory cartilage.
