Encinepeltus was named by Ameghino (1891). Its type is Encinepeltus petesatus.

It was corrected as Eucinepeltus by Ameghino (1891); it was misspelled as Eucinepeltus by Ameghino (1894), Brown (1912) and McKenna and Bell (1997).

It was assigned to Propalaehoplophoridae by Ameghino (1891) and Ameghino (1894); to Glyptodontidae by Brown (1912); and to Propalaehoplophorinae by McKenna and Bell (1997).
