Taxonomy
Encinepeltus was named by Ameghino (1891). Its type is Encinepeltus petesatus.

It was misspelled as Eucinepeltus by Ameghino (1894), Brown (1912) and McKenna and Bell (1997); it was corrected as Eucinepeltus by Ameghino (1891), Scott (1903), Hoffstetter (1958) and Fernicola (2008).

It was assigned to Glyptodontidae by Scott (1903) and Brown (1912); to Propalaehoplophorinae by Hoffstetter (1958) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Propalaehoplophoridae by Ameghino (1891), Ameghino (1894) and Fernicola (2008).
