Taxonomy
Testudo polyphemus was named by Daudin (1802). It is extant. It is the type species of Gopherus, Gopherus (Gopherus).

It was recombined as Gopherus (Gopherus) polyphemus by Hutchison (1996); it was recombined as Gopherus polyphemus by Brattstrom (1961), Bramble (1982) and Reynoso and Montellano-Ballesteros (2004).
